Devenney Cup Final

The Devenney cup final mirrored the political stalemate in the country as Dorchester United & Kings Arms Wheatley could not be separated in 120 minutes of football, the dreaded penalty shoot out deciding the outcome with Kings Arms squeezing through 4-3.

Wheatley keeper Jeff Simmonds saved a twice taken spot kick in the finale to retain the cup they won last season.

The first half was a predictable battle played at a fierce pace, Brian Rawlings came closest to scoring when his free kick from 30 yards thundered against the Wheatley crossbar.

Luke Cuff fired a free kick that Dorchester keeper Toby Coffey saved at the second attempt but both defences proved impregnable.

United`s man of the match Mark Ingram made one of many last ditch tackles, in the second half, when Cuff was about to score, Cuff then played in Jay Hill but his effort was blocked. Wheatley were in the driving seat for most of the second half but Ingram & Coffey were in fine form.

United sub John Boal then capitalised on a rare mistake in the Wheatley defence, that set him on a dangerous run but his cross was smothered by Simmonds.

As is often the case, extra time saw the games first goal & Dorchester in the ascendancy but Wheatleys Cuff ran on to a loose ball & smashed home an unstoppable drive. With players tiring after an energy sapping game, Ingram found space on the edge of the box to squeeze a shot past Simmonds, to the delight of a largely Dorchester based crowd.

The stalemate meant another lottery the penalty shoot, a cruel way for any team to lose but is there anything better?

Ian Marshall blasted United`s first kick over the bar but Wheatleys four spot kicks all found the net, from the solid defender Shaun Pearce, Jay Hill, Adam Simmonds & Neil Lockhart. Although United`s Brian Rawlings, Mark Ingram & John Boal all found the net, the unfortunate David Smyth was the player whose twice taken penalty was saved by Simmonds & so it is the Wheatley side who look towards a league & cup double. Current champions Dorchester still have a big say in the title & can still retain the division 1 trophy.

Division 1

Barton United chalked up a rugby score as they murdered The Bay Tree 20-0, had this been a boxing match it would of been stopped in the first round!

Liam O`Callaghan top scored with five Barton goals, Aaron Armstrong grabbed a hat trick. Jelroy Constant, Julian McCalmon, Colin Ryan, Alex Fasoranti & Tom Heyday all scored twice, Tyrone Brackett & Darren Clare completed the rout. Although Barton played some super "keep" football, their opponents were largely in another place! Heyday deserves a mention for a scorching volley, that found the top corner of the net from 30 yards.

AFC Cowley whacked Sutton Revolution 10-1, Joe Cook smashing a treble in a win that completes the double over the Revolution. Dominic Bruno & Aaron Barrett both scored twice, Riccar Bruno, Daniel Richmond & Daniel Barrett finished off any chance of a revolution.

Standlake Garage managed to find eleven players but still lost 7-5 at home to Kidlington Royals, in a week that saw 43 goals scored in three division 1 games & has pundits racing for the record books.

Lewis Coyle & Jamie Burns scored hat tricks for the Royals, Oxford United fan Burns must be hoping Mr Constable can emulate his treble next Sunday, which came from both feet & a header!

Danny Wise scored the other Royal goal, Garage hit back with a double from Dan Bishop, with Mike Duerden, Alan Rogers & Darren Light all finding the net.

The result confirms division 1 football for Kidlington next season but ends many years in the top flight for Standlake.

Division 2

Kennington United confirmed the runners up spot & promotion following a 7-1 home win over rivals Didcot Casuals. Another fine season from Kennington & their scorers came from a Jack Smith treble, a double strike from John Mills & single efforts from Andy McMahon & the returning Neil McMahon.

Oxford FC finish the season oh a high with a 6-0 home win over Sandman that confirms second division football for Oxford but condemns Sandman to the drop. Top scorer Andrew Pantry grabbed a treble, Claude Ngoma hit two & Sekou scored the other.

Rutherford Lab also finish with a win that clinches a place in division 2, John Hawkins firing a hat trick in a 6-3 win at in form Research Machines. Jon Watts, Dave Templeman & Andy Arnold were the other Lab scorers, ex Rutherford striker Matty Lyford hit a brace in reply, the other RM goal coming from Adam Luck.

Division 3A

Donnington need just a point in their final two games to confirm the championship following an 11-1 demolition at an in form Black Head Bletchingdon. The UTV leagues top scorer Lee Spencer cracked another treble, his 60th of the season. He was out done, at least on this occasion, by Ian Smith who smashed a four timer. Midfielder Ryan Coles was in amongst the goals, he hit a treble & Nathan Poyser completed the scoring for the Oxford side. Adam Wells grabbed the Bletch consolation.

Dan Oyston hit a treble for Mansfield Road to help keep his sides faint promotion hopes alive, in a 3-2 win at home to Iffley Harriers. Both sides have enjoyed a fine season, Harriers hit back through Andy Geare & Hanny Musa.

An Aaron Williams strike was enough to ensure a 1-0 win for AFC Jericho at Northway Boys & Girls.

Division 3B

Chalgove confirmed the 3B championship in some style, thrashing nine man White Horse Abingdon 14-0. Simon Godfrey smashed five of the champions goals, Rob Cantwell hit a four timer. Ricky Armstrong scored twice & there were strikes from Ben Axon, Danny Smith & Luke Hutt.

Cross keys Wallingford had a fine season, pushing Chalgrove to the penultimate game & they need just a point from a home game with Hampstead Norreys to confirm runners up spot. Keys were made to work hard for the points but a double from Lewis Ryland & a strike from Chris Greenaway secured the 3-2 win at home to Abingdon Exiles. Matty Cook & Adam Cove scored for Exiles, to keep it tight.

Ridgeway cup runners up Punchbowl Pirates can nick second spot if Cross keys make an unlikely slip up but have to beat Chalgrove to have any chance. The latest win came in a 3-2 derby win at Abingdon Knights, Luke McIntosh, Chris Wilkins & James Organ scoring for the Pirates, Mike James & Chris Stringer replied for the Knights.
